Book Club: Indian Women Will Strike a Chord With 'Purple Hibiscus' Set in Nigeria

MAKERS India•13 January 2021

As part of MAKERS India Book Club series, we are recommending the novel Purple Hibiscus by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for every Indian woman. The story is set in Nigeria in the 1980s, when the country is still just two decades into Independence, struggling with its political instability, and religion often clashing with, and dictating, the lives of common man. Told from the eyes of Kambili Achike, a young teenger who lives with her religious parents and a rebellious brother, the novel throws light on the impact of religious and political pressures on families, especially young girls and women - much like it does in India, even in 2021.
