The women’s cricket team of India on Thursday recorded its third win in the ongoing T20 series against South Africa women’s team, thereby sealing its win of the series.
The series which was supposed to have five matches extended it to six, as the second and third were cancelled due to rain.
India women had won the first and fourth matches earlier, and confirmed the series win by winning the fifth match on October 3. The sixth and final match of the series will be held on Friday, October 4.
At the match held at Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Surat, South Africa Women could only manage 98/8 at the end of 20 overs while Indian women beat them by five wickets and 17 balls left. India’s Radha Yadav got three wickets while Deepti Sharma got two.
On October 1, in the fourth match of the series, India won by 51 runs against South Africa Women, who has made 89 runs, losing seven wickets.
(The match was delayed for half an hour from 7pm to 7.30 pm due to wet outfield of the stadium, and was revised to 17 overs.)
T20 matches have not had good luck at Surat due to unpredictable rainfall. Previously, the second and third matches were abandoned as the outfield remained soggy and unfit to host an international match.
In the fourth match, which pushed India’s chances closer to a series win, Indian opener Shafali Verma scored 46 off 33 balls and Poonam Yadav took three wickets for 13 runs. Poonam who was posted as leg-spinner was named player of the match for her bowling.
Shafali, aged just 15, was credited with laying a good foundation before getting dismissed for a four-ball duck on her debut in the opening match.
