Neena Gupta is nothing short of an enigma. The National Award winning actor and director inspired many when she posted “looking for a job” on Instagram. Her candid request won the hearts of many, including Priyanka Chopra-Jonas.
Since then, the actor has appeared on movies and shows alike, wowing her audience. And now, the international audience is sitting up and noticing her brilliance as well. Her latest film The Last Color has been listed among 344 eligible films to be nominated in the Best Picture category at the 2020 Academy Awards.
The directorial debut of chef-turned-filmmaker Vikas Khanna, The Last Color puts the spotlight on the lives of widows in Vrindavan and Varanasi, and is gaining international applause.
In a tweet, Vikas thanked the 60-years-old actor for believing in his vision.
“I had no expectations at all. It’s a small film without the backing of any big banner, made with Vikas’ own money. So, we were not expecting much. But it makes us happy as a small film made with love has been appreciated,” she said.
Neena essays the lead role as Noor, a widow who agrees to befriend a nine-year-girl tightrope walker, who promises to add colour to Noor’s life.
Much of Neena Gupta’s recent films have revolved around topics normally deemed as ‘taboo’ in society. She won the audience’s hearts in the role of a middle-aged housewife in the film Badhaai Ho (2018), who suddenly finds herself pregnant. Her role earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for the Best Actress.
Now, Neena has two more movies in her bag – Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Panga – which are slated for release in 2020.
Not one to shy away from expressing her opinions, Neena was also one of the actresses who joined the Twitter buzz around the casting choices of Saand ki Aankh – which portrayed older character but chose to hire much younger actors instead.

"Yes, I was just thinking about this. Hamari umar ke role toe kamsekam humse kara lo bhai (At least cast us roles that suit our age man)," Neena tweeted.
In another tweet, she also gracefully congratulated the actors and producers of the movie, showing that she is not one to hold a grudge and knows to appreciate good art.
Always one to break stereotypes, Neena Gupta has been shocking the Indian society, even giving birth to her daughter, Masaba, out of wedlock.
However, she said it was unfair to her daughter, advising young women against going down the same road.
