Superstar, Icon, Enigma: Madhuri Dixit Relives Her Cinematic Journey
Madhuri Dixit (53) started training for Kathak at the age of three and went on to train for eight years, becoming a professionally trained Kathak dancer. Little did she know then, that she will go on to become one of the most revered dancers in the country. For the Microbiology student, becoming a film actor was never planned; but Madhuri decided to pursue her film career after falling in love with the camera in her debut film, ‘Abodh,’ in 1984. Madhuri tasted first box-office success in 1988 with her film, ‘Tezaab.’ She became an overnight dancing sensation with the song ‘Ek do teen’ - a chartbuster that made everyone take notice of her dancing talent. Following its success, Madhuri went on to become a part of many superhit hits and chartbuster songs, establishing herself as one of most successful actors in the history of Indian cinema. In a 36 year long career, Madhuri has starred in over 70 films, winning six Filmfare awards, and Padma Shri in 2008. She was also one of the highest paid actors in the 1990s and early 2000s, and has many evergreen dancing numbers to her credit. Watch more about her journey and her take on the changing role of women in cinema in our exclusive interview. Interviewed & produced by Varnika Gupta; Edited by Anjali.
