In a welcome move, the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) has announced its decision to rename the Sector 50 Metro Station as ‘She Man’. A clarion call for inclusivity, this initiative is likely to open up a world of opportunities for transgenders in the form of employment and other special facilities.
According to Ritu Maheshwari, the Managing Director of NMRC, renaming the station will help raise awareness and instill sensitivity amongst people around the transgender community.
“As per Census 2011, there are 4.9 lakh transgenders in India out of which 30,000-35,000 stay in NCR. The move will be an important step in providing meaningful inclusion and participation of the transgender community,” she has said.
Plan of Action
The station is part of the Aqua line that started functioning in January 2019, and is the link between the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida. The NMRC plans to engage members of the transgender community in ticketing and other aspects of its function too.
To raise awareness on transgender inclusivity amongst the public, there will be gender-inclusive signposts installed across the station. The announcements will also be made in a manner that helps sensitise the public towards this community. Other staff at NMRC will also be trained to tackle issues concerning the community.
The NMRC has also invited suggestions from the public as well as NGOs dealing with the transgender community to help in upgrading facilities for the community. The received suggestions will be deliberated upon by a committee.
The move is similar to what has been implemented in stations part of the Pink line. Only women staff have been deployed at these stations for various tasks, and special facilities are provided to all women passengers. Earlier in 2017, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited in Kerala had taken a similar step by employing 23 transgenders.
