Priyanka Chopra is counted amongst the finest performers in the Indian film industry, and over the years, she has become one of the most popular and successful Indian faces in the global entertainment industry. Apart from being an actor, Priyanka has also emerged as a global fashion icon, a successful film producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, singer and most recently, an author.
In 2020, Priyanka celebrated 20 glorious years of being in showbiz and she recently shared her 3 most amazing performances with her fans via Instagram. Labeling them under her ongoing #20in2020 series, she picked ‘Jilmil’ from Barfi, ‘Susanna’ from Saat Khoon Maaf and ‘Kashibai’ from Bajirao Mastani.
“In my 20 years in the entertainment industry, I’ve had the privilege to play some distinct, memorable characters crafted by the finest directors in the business. Today, I’m talking about three such amazing, complex characters I’ve played at different points in time, with depth, conflict and resilience & working with 3 phenomenal directors who I believe are an institution in themselves,” stated Priyanka in an Instagram post.
Let’s take a trip down the memory lane and she why these characters were so special and memorable.
Kashi Bai from Bajirao Mastani (2015)
“Bold, loyal & fierce…Kashibai was one of the most endearing characters I’ve played. Thank you Sanjay sir and everyone on the team for bringing Kashi into my life. Her grace under fire is still so inspiring to me,” stated Priyanka about her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani.
Playing a supporting role, Priyanka shined in the role of the ‘Kashi Bai,’ the first wife of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao Ballal. Though the film was a dramatic love story of ‘Bajiro and Mastani,’ Priyanka’s performance as a wife who is torn between love and duty and a headstrong woman who decides not to forgive her husband for cheating on her, became the beating heart of this period saga.
Priyanka’s performance won her all major awards, including the Filmfare, in the supporting role category.
Jhilmil from Barfi! (2012)
In her Instagram post, Priyanka stated the following about her portrayal of ‘Jhilmil’: To play Jhilmil, a girl with autism was a serious responsibility. But under Anurag sir’s tutelage, she turned out to be honest, raw and brought me so much joy.
And the role of ‘Jhilmil’ brought a lot of joy to everyone who watched this heartwarming love story between a autistic girl and a deaf-mute man. Touted as one of her career best performances, Anurag Basu’s Barfi was a celebration of love, life, companionship and hope, and has been one of the most endearing and sensitive representations of people with special needs in Indian cinema.
Susanna from 7 Khoon Maaf (2011)
“7 Khoon Maaf…a dark comedy with a woman protagonist who is looking for true love and tries to find it 7 times, but in the end, is still lonely. Thank you Vishal Sir for giving me Susanna – complex, immersive, impulsive yet vulnerable,” wrote Priyanka about her role in VIshal Bharadwaj’s 7 Khoon Maaf.
Inspired by an adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s Susanna’s Seven Husbands, Priyanka played the role of a complex woman, a serial killer in the film. Carrying the film on her shoulders and essaying a range of emotions as well as physical transformation from the age of 20 to 65, Priyanka’s flawless act was the backbone of this dark thriller, a genre that we hardly see women playing central roles.
