Actor Radhika Apte is renowned for her acting chops; but this time around, she has wowed the world with her directorial debut, The Sleepwalkers. The short film has been honoured with the ‘Best Midnight Short Award’ at Palm Springs International Short Fest that was held online a few days ago. According to the Fest’s official website, winners will be awarded cash prizes worth $25,000 including five Academy Award qualifying awards.
According to media reports, the film revolves around sleepwalking, , and has Gulshan Devaiah and Shahana Goswami in the lead roles.
An advocate of experimental cinema, Radhika has earlier dabbled in unconventional subjects in films like Phobia (2016) and Parched (2015). On being asked why she decided to make a film on sleepwalking, she said, “What the film is about does not really come across in the trailer, so I can’t really give it away. I started diving last year and that’s where I got the idea.”
Breaking the mould
In fact, the actress has always had a soft spot for direction. In an interview to IANS, Radhika shared, “I enjoyed the process (of direction) a lot. I am excited because, hopefully, people can watch it soon. I hope I get to do more work as a director!”
Radhika has made her mark as an actress across multiple languages – including Kabali (2016) in Tamil with superstar Rajinikanth. Over the last two years, she has become the darling of the masses through online films and web-series like Lust Stories, Sacred Games, and Ghoul.
She was nominated for International Emmy Award last year, and was noted for her performance in the national award winning films like Padman and Andhadhun (both released in 2018).
Currently, she is working on her next film Raat Akeli Hai, opposite actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, apart from Apple TV’s much-awaited series Shantaram, where she is cast opposite actor Charlie Hunnam.
