It is not easy for any parent to watch their child going through an illness – especially if it is a serious one like Cancer. But when cricketer Yuvraj Singh recovered from Cancer a few years ago, it was his mother Shabnam Singh that he thanked and praised the most – for supporting him through the toughest phase of his life.
Yuvraj was diagnosed with Lung Cancer right after India won the Cricket World Cup in 2011, in which he was the ‘Man of the Series.’ Telling the world about his illness was unthinkable at the time, as Cancer bears a stigma in the society, especially for a renowned sportsman.
But none of this bothered Shabnam, who only wanted her son to get better. Not only did the single mother stay with her son during his treatment in the US, after his recovery, she decided to give back to the very society that supported and motivated the family while Yuvraj was battling cancer. Today she heads the YouWeCan Foundation, which was launched in 2012, hoping to raise awareness against Cancer and the importance of early detection.
In a recent chat with MAKERS India, Shabnam opened up about her son's journey with Cancer, his recovery, and the YouWeCan Foundation.
