India has at least 22 languages, and authors of fiction in these languages have contributed to the rich literary culture that India can be proud of today. However, the multitude of languages also play spoilsport to the average reader, who may know only their mother tongue and one or two other Indian languages at the best. This is one of those instances where the omnipresence of English has helped Indian authors grow their reach. It has become a norm for best-sellers and award-winning works in regional language to be translated into English, to serve a larger audience in the country.
The multitude of writers in India’s regional languages are reaching a larger and wider audience, thanks to English translations. Here are a few works of fiction by Indian authors, translated to English, which provide a realistic peak into women’s lives.
