While Kerala has been battling a surge of COVID-19 cases, it has also reported cases of Zika virus, a mosquito-borne infection transmitted through Aedes mosquitos. The first reported case in the state was that of a pregnant woman.
Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of microcephaly (smaller than the normal head size). The association between Zika virus and microcephaly was first reported in Brazil in 2015.
With no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat Zika virus infection, pregnant women are advised against traveling to areas with a Zika outbreak.
